A New Arrival... Born November 2013
Happy news indeed, one of our ‘Ham Babies’ has now had a baby of her own. Araminta Rose was born to Melissa Hamilton-Beazley and Oliver Harwood-Smith in November 2013.
Melissa has been coming to Ham Polo Club all her life. It will be interesting to watch ‘Minty’ grow up in her mother’s footsteps. We will be glad of the opportunity to observe and guard her as did her Parents and the Club Oldies for Melissa in her early years.
Well done Melissa and Ollie. DEAR FRIENDS DEPARTED
Brenda Miller Died March 2013
Brenda was a long term much loved friend of Ham Polo Club. It all began when her then husband Sam played at the Club after the War. Brenda could be seen on many a Sunday on the side-lines alongside Ivy Walsh and Peggy Healy watching the games. The Club was in a quandary whether to purchase the second ground, we went ahead and her personal support when she very kindly gave true backing at a time when she could ill afford and gave a small donation, gave us the incentive to go ahead. If Brenda had faith in the Club, then we were doing the right thing. From Brenda it was a very kind gesture indeed.
A very beautiful, elegant, kind and gentle lady who will be sadly missed by those who knew her. Farewell gracious Lady.
J.W.M (Buff) Crisp Died October 2013
Ham Polo Club has always had a tradition of honouring those who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of our sport by appointing them to become Honorary President of the Club for a period of four years. We are honoured to count Buff Crisp as one of that select band of Club Presidents who included such great names as Major Archie David, Sir David Brown of Aston Martin fame, Douglas Riley-Smith, Geoffrey Lawson, Billy Walsh and Bryan Morrison.
As Secretary of the HPA between 1989 and 2000 Buff changed the way our governing body was run and set the tone for the current administration which is probably regarded as the best run and most senior of all the international bodies.
In post as the Secretary of the Hurlingham Polo Association, which has now changed to Chief Executive Officer, he delighted in recalling an amusing little story of when he was travelling to the USA where their titles certainly did not include a ‘Secretary’ on polo business – The Americans were expecting a Long Leggy Blonde – and all they got was Buff!
Prior to his role at the HPA, Buff was the Chairman of the Pony Club from 1977 to 1989 and along with his loving wife Liza, they were in many ways the power and energy behind the modern pony club which is the envy of all polo nations today. Many of their ‘Polo Babies’ have now played for England and this was something they were both justly proud of. Buff and his family, including his son and daughter-in-law, William & Lowie Crisp, who so generously host the HPC Team each year in Newport Rhode Island, have been great supporters of our Club throughout the years, for which we thank them most sincerely.
Our thoughts and wishes are with his family and he will be sorely missed. 68 HAM POLO CLUB
