The 2013
Roehampton Cup sponsored by Bang & Olufsen of Kingston
8 Goal
The Roehampton Cup is not just one of Ham’s most historic competitions but one of the UK’s oldest trophies dating back to 1902.
League games this year were played at a number of different grounds, many thanks go to Vichai Raksriaksorn and Ali Albwardy for donating their high goal pitches for use during the tournament.
Through to the final were Tchogan and Rosario; Tchogan had been runners up in 2008 and winners in 2009 and were deserving of another place in the final. Whilst Tchogan’s line up had changed slightly each season Rosario, who were 2012’s winners, were playing with the same four members of the team. A win for the team representing the Rosario Club in Santa Fe would have been only the second time in the tournament’s history the same line up had one twice.
From the start Tchogan looked to be the more organised team with their very english style of 8 goal polo working well. Dawnay and Pemble kept possession steadily gaining ground till they were within reach of the goal.
The team form Rosario however came back to equalise in the final chukka and extra time looked more and more likely. Roman and Fontanarossa had been looking to make passes between each other that they could run onto and then keep going to goal at speed.
Then with less than a minute to go Sebastian Dawnay, whose Grandfather had won in 1937 and 1938 took the ball straight from the line out and to goal sealing the victory for Tchogan. Team Patron Heiko Voelker was presented with the trophy by James Simons the assistant district manager for B&O and the BBP rug was presented by the Liphook Equine Hospital to Simba played by Nico Fontanarosa.
