Qualifying for Sectional Championships – Singles/Pairs/Dance


Fill-Up Rule: Singles competitors at a regional championship may progress directly to their sectional championship if, at the close of entries, there are four or fewer com- petitors in senior, junior, novice intermediate or juvenile their singles events at the close of entries. The Competitions Committee chair may also invoke this rule after the close of entries if international byes and/or withdrawals reduce an event to four or fewer competitors. A. Additional competitors from the same event in other regions of the same section shall will be permitted to enter in order to bring the number of competitors up to a maximum of 12 (or more, if ties make it necessary).


B. These additional competitors will be selected in the order of their placement. Should this result in two or more competitors qualifying for one additional place, all will be included, even if this causes the total number of competitors in the event to exceed 12.

C. If there are 12 or fewer skaters entered in the same singles event within one section, all regional competitors in that section may advance directly to their sectional championship regardless of the number of skaters entered in each of those regional championships.


Senior, junior, novice, intermediate and juvenile Singles skaters competitors qualify for sectional championships by: A. Placing in the top four at a regional championship; B. Receiving an international bye (per rule 2473); C. Having four or fewer entries in their event at a regional championship or having 12 or fewer entries in their event in all regional championships within their sec- tion;


D. Having won the U.S. Championships at the junior level the previous season, if competing at the junior level this season;


E. Having won the U.S. Championships at the novice level the previous season, if competing at the novice level this season;

F. Having won a sectional championship at the senior level the previous season. Qualifying for the U.S. Figure Skating Championships

B. All intermediate and juvenile pair and ice dance couples will compete at their re- spective sectional championship. The four highest-placing teams in each division (intermediate dance, intermediate pairs, juvenile dance and juvenile pairs) will advance to the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Balance of rule will be re-lettered accordingly.


Competitors: D. Must state whether or not they will skate in their event(s) if there are four or fewer entries in their region (or section for pairs, ice dance or adult events) or 12 or fewer entries in their section (or in the nation for pairs, ice dance or adult events). The statement is binding.


84. APPROVED AS AMENDED – Competitions Committee Amend rules 2542, 2544 and 2405 (D) (pages 115 and 111) as follows:

2542 For the U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships each competitor shall will have achieved the appropriate test qualifications and must be at least 21 years of age, or must meet the age requirement of the event that they are entering, by the close of entries.


Fill-Up Rule: A.


If, at the close of entries, there are fewer than four or fewer competitors regis- tered for a qualifying event at an adult sectional championship, additional com- petitors from the same qualifying event in other sections shall will be permitted to enter the U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships in order to bring the number of competitors up to a maximum of 12 (or more, if ties make it necessary). Competitors: B. May enter, if an adult competitor,: 1. Only one championship event per discipline regardless of eligibility by test requirements; and


2. A maximum of four events at the U.S. Adult Championships. a. If entering more than one event, each event entered must be in a different category (i.e. free skate, partnered dance, solo dance, light entertainment skate, dramatic skate, etc.) with the exception that a

competitor who qualifies for a championship event through the adult sectional championships may also enter the corresponding nonqualify- ing event in the same category. However, if qualifying for a champi- onship event puts the competitor over the four-event limit, the competi- tor will have to withdraw from one event of the competitor’s choosing. The subsequent event entry fee for that one event, and only that one event, will be refunded. Administrative fees are not refundable.

C. At the chief referee’s discretion, age class events with fewer than six entries may be combined, The chief referee may combine age classes and levels, if the entry numbers warrant, after consultation with the national vice chair for adult champi- onships and the chair of the Competitions Committee.

The following definitions pertain to all U.S. Figure Skating qualifying competitions for singles/pairs/ice dance: B. Practice group: These groups are pre-defined by the chief referee and deter- mine the official practice sessions to which each skater is assigned. The practice groups do not change based on the draw.


D. Official practice ice: These sessions are offered at the discretion of the LOC and chief referee and, if offered, are at least one day before the event segment. Competition music will be played.
