rollercoaster – the first in Coney Island since 1927, the year the Cyclone was built. The Thunderbolt distinguishes itself in a couple of ways, including its 90º lift hill and first drop and its vertical loop. It is a thrill ride with five inversions that people cannot get anywhere else in New York City. Riders have said amazing things about the coaster.”

The ride comes equipped with three cars, each with capacity of nine passengers, sat in three rows of three. The ergonomic seating is designed to be comfortable for people of most body sizes while lap bars allow for more freedom of movement than the over-the-head restraints found on most looping coasters.

Signature attraction Ferrari considers the Thunderbolt to be Luna Park’s new signature attraction and thinks it will increase attendance especially among Manhattanites and tourists. “Luna Park competes with other entertainment venues in the city like theatres and museums,” he notes. “We think the Thunderbolt will also increase the reputation of Coney Island as a thrilling alternative to other entertainment venues and amusements parks, especially because it is so close to Manhattan.” The CAI president and long-serving Zamperla executive says he expects to see other similar rides from the Italian manufacturer appear across the globe. “The Thunderbolt has many special features – the vertical lift, narrow footprint, ultra comfortable seats and lap-bar restraint – that, when put together, make it

a unique ride. The three seats per row account for smaller families in certain areas of the globe, specifically Europe and China.” Back in New York City, the addition of Thunderbolt does not complete this particular corner of Coney Island. “Luna Park will continue to grow,” Ferrari predicts. “We have many special, top-secret projects in the works. You can look forward to many other great things coming.”

21st Century

Luna Park Luna Park was named after the original park of the same name that operated in Brooklyn, New York City, from 1903 to 1944. The new look Luna Park was opened in 2010 by Central Amusement International (CAI), an international amusement park planner, developer and operator of which Zamperla is the majority shareholder. The company was founded in 2002 with the goal of establishing a seasonal amusement park in New York’s Central Park, a project which came to fruition one year later. At Coney Island, Luna Park now features over 40 family- friendly rides and attractions including the historic Cyclone wooden coaster, Soarin' Eagle flying coaster, Tickler spinning coaster, Boardwalk Flight Skycoaster and Zamperla's original Air Race and Water Mania rides. To ride the Thunderbolt, visitors must pay an extra $10 on top of regular wristband prices. CAI also operates the historic B&B Carousel, which operated in its own building across the road since 1919 until being restored and moved this year as the centerpiece of Steeplechase Plaza on the boardwalk.

As well as the amusements operated by CAI, visitors to the famous New York City destination can enjoy long-standing Coney Island favourites including Deno's Wonder Wheel, Spookerama, and a stroll along the boardwalk.
