MEDUSA & GOLIATH Rocky Mountain screams into Six Flags


In 2008, Rocky Mountain Construction founder Fred Grubb collaborated with rollercoaster engineer Alan Schilke to develop two revolutionary new wooden coaster technologies: The Topper and I-Box tracks. In recent weeks, two new hybrid (wood-steel) RMC rides have opened, providing an exciting experience for guests at each of their respective parks. Here’s the lowdown


Goliath Six Flags Great America


Located outside Chicago in Gurnee, Illinois, Six Flags Great America launched Goliath, an all-new hybrid rollercoaster from Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC) on 19 June – it sets several new records. “Goliath is innovation at its best and will forever change the skyline of Six Flags Great America,” says park president Hank Salemi. Reaching speeds of 72 mph (116 kph), Goliath becomes the world’s fastest wooden rollercoaster. It provides the tallest drop on a wooden coaster – 180 feet (55m) – at angle of 85°. Riders are treated to two upside down turns through two separate manoeuvres, an over-banked turn and a dive loop. In total the ride features almost 1km (3,100ft) of orange steel-topped track. Two 24-seater trains provide an hourly capacity for just over 1,000 riders. The addition of Goliath, which resides in the
