loss and paralysis from injection of toxic fl uids. They also transmit disease, including anaplasmosis, bovine piroplasmosis and tularemia.

Internal parasites • Include the gastro-intestinal nematodes, lungworms, liver fl ukes, adult and larval tapeworms and coccidian

• Cause just as many productivity problems and eco- nomic problems as the external ones.

• Internal parasites to be concerned about include 1) Haemonchus (large stomach worm) 2) Ostertagia (brown stomach worm Type I and Type II)

3) Trichostrongylus (stomach hair worm) 4) Cooperia (Cooper’s worm) 5) Oesophagostomum (nodular worm) The brown stomach worm is most economically

signifi cant. The normal life cycle is modifi ed when the immature form encysts itself in the lining of the abomasum causing severe damage to the stomach cells that produce acid and enzymes. This phenomenon is called pre-type II Ostertagiasis. All of these internal parasites infect different ar- eas of the digestive tract and require the cattle host

to complete their lifecycle. They also cause numerous problems including depressed immune systems and increased disease susceptibility. They suppress ap- petites while limiting nutrient intake and absorption. Reduced nutrition impacts the animal’s performance in the form of reduced feed effi ciency, reduced rate of gain and reproduction, and lower immune response to vaccinations. Use parasiticides correctly to be effective and save

cost. The time to kill grubs is not necessarily the same time to kill fl ukes, mites, lice or internal parasites. Sea- sonal control of parasites may be more cost-effective than a blanket “shotgun” approach. Work with your local veterinarian to develop a

sound strategic deworming program. Editor’s note: David T. Bechtol, D.V.M., of Palo Duro
