Wagner attends White House Easter Egg Roll

Two-time U.S. champion Ashley Wagner attended the famous

Easter Egg Roll on the White House lawn in April, stepping in as an advocate for healthy lifestyle choices. “I had an incredible day at the White House for the Easter Egg

Roll,” Wagner said. “I was able to meet and take a photo with the first lady, Michelle Obama, inside the White House. My sponsor, FAAR (the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility), which does amaz- ing advocacy work promoting a healthy lifestyle and saying no to un- derage drinking, got me invited to this event. The theme of this year’s Easter Egg Roll was all about health and making good food choices. This was a perfect fit, as FAAR and I promote the same cause.” The 136th annual event, titled “Hop into Healthy, Swing into

Shape,” featured live music performances, activity centers, cooking stations, storytelling and, of course, Easter egg rolling. The event pro- moted the first lady’s Let’s Move! initiative to help kids grow up healthy and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. “I had a lot fun walking the south lawn of the White House, tour-

ing the vegetable garden, Easter Egg Roll, yoga and a few obstacle courses with some NFL players,” Wagner said. More than 30,000 guests attended the event.

Weiss inducted into D.C. Sports Hall of Fame Three-time U.S. champion and two-time

Olympian Michael Weiss was inducted into the Washington, D.C. Sports Hall of Fame April 27, pri- or to the Washington Nationals game at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. “I am honored to be a part of D.C. sports his-

tory by being inducted into the Hall of Fame,” Weiss said on his official website. “Growing up in the D.C. area, I cheered on so many of my own heroes in lo- cal sports. To now be part of that respected group is a dream come true.” The 2014 class was selected for induction

based on their outstanding contributions to the world of sports, thereby bringing honor and recog-

Weiss and former Washington Capitals goalie Olie Kolzig

nition to the nation’s capital. Weiss joined a select group of Washington-area standout athletes and sports personalities already in the Hall of Fame, in- cluding Sammy Baugh, James Brown, Dominique Dawes and many others. Other 2014 inductees are “Lefty” Driesell,

former men’s basketball coach at the University of Maryland; Johnny Holliday, Maryland sports broadcaster; Olaf “Olie” Kolzig, former Washington Capitals goalie; George Solomon, former sports editor for The Washington Post; Theodore Lern- er, managing principal owner of the Washington Nationals; and Chris Weller, former head coach of women’s basketball at the University of Maryland.

HQ Profile: Ingrid Benson I am the Team USA coordinator. I manage

all of the logistics for Team USA when it heads out to international competitions. I am also the headquarters liaison for the International Committee. What’s your favorite part of the job? I

love getting to interact with so many incredi- ble people. Skating has been a passion of mine for a long time, so it’s also wonderful that I get to incorporate that in my job. What do you do in your spare time? I’m

still fairly new to Colorado, and I like getting out and exploring everything it has to offer. I can also be found cheering on my Boston sports teams from afar. What would people be surprised to

know about you? I competed in synchronized skating for 14 years, and my first U.S. Synchro-

nized Skating Championships was right here in Colorado Springs in 2001. I still remember taking a team photo outside U.S. Figure Skat- ing’s headquarters. I have attended every U.S. Synchronized Championships since 1995 when my sister started, and I hope the streak continues. What is your ideal vacation? I absolute-

ly love exploring the world and learning about different cultures. I was an international stud- ies and history double major in college, which pretty much lends itself to traveling. I have been fortunate enough to see many places in Europe, but traveling to any foreign city and learning about its history would be ideal. Tell us a little bit about your family. I

grew up in Massachusetts with two wonder- ful parents, Deanne and Gordon. I also have an older sister and a brother-in-law, Krista and Nate, who live in Pennsylvania now. We’re pret-

ty spread out across the country, but that just means I get to visit more places to see every- one.
