‘Awesome accomplishment’ 2014 U.S. INTERCOLLEGIATE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
“Intercollegiate nationals further em- phasize how the love and passion for

figure skating can unite so many people from all over the nation. Although there were nine different schools going head- to-head this past weekend, I truly felt as though the entire collegiate commu- nity became one. This experience was a mere reflection of what I love about intercollegiate figure skating, which
promotes passion, sportsmanship and camaraderie between skaters from the top schools in the nation.” — MICHELLE HONG, UC BERKELEY
champions at the 2014 Intercollegiate Team Fig- ure Skating Championships April 11‒13, besting the nine-team field in Adrian, Mich., by more than 17 points. Te Blue Hens from Newark, Del., have
won three of the last four Team Championships and four overall since the event’s inception in 2000. Fifty-five teams competed in the 2013–14 intercollegiate series. “Repeating our win at nationals is an amaz-
ing feeling,” Delaware’s Kyle Herring said. “I think repeating as champs is something the entire team knew we could do from the start of the sea- son and continued to strive for throughout, but actually achieving it was an incredible experience and an awesome accomplishment.” Herring credits the team’s depth for much of
its success. “We have so many great skaters in so many
different events that we never have to rely on one event or another to bring in points,” he said. “On any given day our dancers and freestylers at all levels will step up, which is what makes skating for this team so stress-free and fun.”
Te Blue Hens hold two full team practices
a week and often come in for individual training as well. “On any given day you can find a majority
of our team at the rink training and helping each other out,” Herring said. Boston University finished second with
115.5 points and Dartmouth College was third, chalking up 114.5 points. Host Adrian College, in only its second season as a team, moved up one spot from 2013 to finish fourth with 73 points. Te Intercollegiate Team Championships is
the culmination of the Intercollegiate Competi- tion Series. To qualify, teams earn points in their respective sections (Eastern, Midwestern and Pacific Coast), with the top three teams in each section qualifying for the Intercollegiate Team Championships. At each competition, including the Team Championships, skaters compete indi- vidually or as part of a team, and by placing in the top five earn their college points.
