Each May the Colonial Skating Club in Philadelphia hosts an annual competition. To encourage more participation from the club’s learn-to-skate members, the club of- fered that group a learn-to-compete class leading up to the annual event. The com- petition class was held on Saturday mornings before the regular learn-to-skate class. The learn-to-compete class was split into two sessions. The first session focused on compulsories, while the second was dedicated to the free skate. Skaters could choose from two selections of music, each a minute in length; the curriculum was based on their highest Basic Skills level passed. “Club members volunteered as coaches while I supervised and helped with any difficulties,” Flyers Skate Zone Skating Director Amber Hartman said. “Our volunteers help weekly with learn to skate, but this was their first experience putting together programs. We have some great future coaches. We also practiced skating on and off the ice at competition, bows and cheered each other on with good sportsmanship.” On the last week of class, skaters presented their programs to friends and family. “Skaters came dressed to the nines,” Hartman said. “They could buy or borrow used skating dresses or outfits from the skating club. Our volunteer coaches got a lesson in what it is like to have to bring a skater to competition, all the butterflies and nerves you have for your competitors. The kids were all amazing.”
In the last six months, Olympian Jason Brown has won over countless fans throughout the world, including first lady Michelle Obama and Russian super- star Evengi Plushenko. His Riverdance free skate has achieved cultlike success, with more than 4 million views on YouTube. While training for the post-Olympic Stars on Ice tour in Monument, Colo., Brown met two more of his young fans, Lucie Reizian and her friend Delaney Peterson, at the Colorado Sports Center. It was there that Brown also won over the admiration of Lucie’s father Greg, who shares his story on
