Olympic medalist embraces testing challenge by BARB REICHERT
Paul Wylie stood amid the running, jumping and sweating of the
S.T.A.R.S. combine and chastised himself for not being able to balance his full weight on the palms of his hands from a seated position. “T is is my Kryptonite,” the 1992 Olympic silver medalist said. Fit and still inner-competitive at 49, Wylie came to support the second
U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships S.T.A.R.S. event, held in Hyan- nis, Mass. Wylie tested at each of the 15 stations under the watchful eye of Dr. Kat Arbour and later gave a presentation to the athletes. “I had a lot of fun doing it,” he said. “Some things really surprised
me that I was not able to do at all. My balance over my right foot is really pretty poor. I know that from yoga classes when all the ladies look at me like, ‘What are you doing? You’re supposed to have balance.’” While Wylie dominated all the other tests — including completing an outstanding 60 tuck jumps in 30 seconds — the 30 adult athletes were reminded to do their best but stay within their own limits. T e tests assess fi tness and suggest strengthening exercises to reduce injury risk and pro- mote better skating. “I teach adults all over the country, and I’m always so amazed at the
heart and the spirit they bring to skating,” Wylie said. “It reminds me of being a kid again, that discovery of this fun sport that you’ve loved your whole life. It’s neat to see people take up that journey later in life and to gauge the progress that they make. Sometimes it may seem glacial to them, but it’s a big deal to learn an Axel or a Lutz combination.”
S.T.A.R.S. representative Kat Arbour measures 1992 Olympic silver medalist Paul Wylie on the tuck jump test. Wylie completed all 15 S.T. A.R.S. tests and had a great time doing it.
