2014 U.S. ADULT CHAMPIONSHIPS 20th

event one to remember ATHLETES, FANS RAVE ABOUT COMPETITION

anniversary

Popular Internet personality Michael Buckley served as emcee of the event.

Only nine skaters have participated in all 20 U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships. They are back row, (l-r) Angela Pre- vost, Thom Mullins, Julie Gidlow, Colleen Conroy, Ted Gradman, Patricia McNamara and Dorothy Ray; front row, l-r: Walter Horton and Phyllis Friello.

When the Yarmouth Ice Club took on the

exciting challenge of hosting 455 skaters at the 20th anniversary of the U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships, it did not do so lightly. More than a year in advance, Yarmouth

president Donna Wunder and Patti Lloyd of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce were already in motion. Tey attended the 2013 Adult Champi- onships in Scottsdale, Ariz., where they met with organizers, U.S. Figure Skating staff and, most im- portantly, the athletes. Adult skaters are just that — adults. And as

adults, they freely share their thoughts and opin- ions. Wunder and Lloyd obviously listened well. Housed in the beautiful Hyannis Youth and Com- munity Center, athletes and fans alike raved about the 2014 event. Wunder quickly passed the praise to the vol-

unteer staff. “One adult skater commented that she had

been to all 20 Adult Championships and that the volunteers at our event were by far the kindest, most helpful volunteers that she had ever encoun- tered,” Wunder said. “She stated that they all had a big smile on their faces, and that even if they didn’t know the answer to the question, they immedi- ately knew who to ask to obtain the answer and always got back to the skater.” Wunder estimates 100 volunteers pitched in

to make the April 8‒12 event a success. In addition to people from the local organizing committee,

volunteers came from the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, hoteliers and restaurateurs, Cape Cod Baseball League, senior softball leagues and the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce Sports Com- mittee, of which Yarmouth Ice Club is a member. Such goodwill also benefited the Hyannis

community. “I know that the area businesses were very pleased with the amount of activity they saw from the adults shopping and going out to dinner, et cetera,” Wunder said. “I hope the adults enjoyed Cape Cod and will look forward to returning.” Te event also featured some star power. Two-time Olympic champion Dick Button signed copies of his book Push Dick’s Button and posed with fans. Button was joined by fellow U.S. Figure Skating Hall-of-Famer Doug Wilson, who signed copies of his book Te World Was Our Stage. As a surprise, they attended the competitors’ party and mingled with athletes. Olympic silver medalist Paul Wylie flew

in from North Carolina to participate in the S.T.A.R.S. combine and then gave a presentation to the skaters. Wylie, very fit at 49, participated alongside the competitive skaters and worked up a good sweat. Te event even featured Michael Buckley, the

popular Internet host of “What the Buck.” Buck- ley, who lives near the rink, emceed and skated in the opening ceremony. He sat in the crowd as well, cheering on friends.

CHAMPIONSHIP MASTERS JUNIOR-SENIOR LADIES BY BARB REICHERT

In the final and most highly anticipated event of the 2014 U.S. Adult Figure Skating Champi- onships, the masters junior-senior ladies did not disappoint. From her opening double Lutz-double toe loop combination, Jaclyn Yacomes of the Wash- ington FSC was on a mission possible. Yacomes skated at an energetic, somewhat frenetic pace to earn the gold medal. Judges rewarded her element- packed program with 55.94 points. Te program’s fast pace suited this dynamic

spinner just fine. “I’m a nurse and I work a lot of nine-hour

days,” Yacomes said. “I don’t have much ice time — maybe three or four hours a week — so when I do get out there, I make the most of it.” Skating to an upbeat tango, there was little
