WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Kitty Carruthers thrives in her fast-paced lifestyle by LOIS ELFMAN
Tis interview took place when four-time U.S. pairs champion, Olympic silver medalist and World bronze medalist Caitlin “Kitty” Car- ruthers Conrad was in her car, driv- ing home from the rink. Te mother of four teenagers who coaches four days a week doesn’t have much alone time, but she loves the busy pace. Her oldest son, Brett Peter,
18, graduates from high school this spring and is heading to Texas Chris- tian University in the fall, which prompted Carruthers Conrad to joke, “I think I’m going to have to go for therapy.” TCU is in Fort Worth, driv-

years, Brett Conrad, when she was in Ice Capades and he was event coor- dinator at the Houston Summit. He asked her out several times, but she kept declining until she was persuad- ed to go on a group outing and they hit it off.
“Ten he started flying in to
see me and I’d fly down here,” she recalled. “Pretty soon we were en- gaged.” Being a pairs skater who under- stands the dynamics of a partnership has helped keep her marriage strong. “You have to learn to work
through problems without giving up,” she said. “When you take the vows you say, ‘For better and for worse,’ and we’ve had some worse, but we’ve learned to work through it.

We love each other just as much and maybe more. It’s the hard times that make you stronger for everything.” One thing they have instilled
in their children is a commitment to community service. Recently, she and three friends participated in an Avon Walk for Breast Can-
