Charlie White around the hotel and meeting ballroom at Governing Council told the story of their remark- able 17-year journey together that culminated with a gold medal in February at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Teir historic ride also served as the foundation

and theme of the annual meeting in Seattle May 1–4 — “Grassroots to Gold: It Takes a Team.” Te delegation took time before its business agen-

da to reflect on this magical season, which included a bronze medal in the inaugural Olympic Team Event. Olympic team leaders Kathy Slack and John

Millier, wearing their red, white and blue sweaters from the Opening Ceremony in Sochi, opened with heartfelt accounts from the Games before introducing two-time U.S. champion and Olympian Ashley Wag- ner.

Wagner described her own journey that started in

the Mommy and Me class. She spoke about how, de- spite all of the moving around she did as a child (her fa- ther was in the military), the rink was always her home. Wagner’s words, which exemplified her love for

the sport and how grateful she was to skate at the Olympics, were especially driven home when she said, “I skate because I am madly in love with this sport.” Te meeting then turned to business and the

transition from one Olympic quad to the next and the election of the 31st president of U.S. Figure Skating. Presidential candidates Sam Auxier and Ron

Pfenning participated in a candidates’ forum, in which they answered questions submitted by the delegates.

Te next morning, votes were cast and Auxier was elected to the post by a vote of 762 to 209. “It’s an incredibly exciting time to be president

of U.S. Figure Skating,” Auxier said. “I look forward to helping our skaters continue their momentum through the Games in 2018, our clubs with the issues they’re facing and helping disciplines such as synchro- nized skating, Teatre on Ice and adults continue to grow.” Auxier most recently served as the Midwestern

and First Vice President of U.S. Figure Skating. He has been a member of U.S. Figure Skating’s Board of Di- rectors for five years and served four years as secretary. He has more than 30 years of experience as an offi- cial and judged the men’s event at the 2014 Olympic Games.

“Tis is a little hard to believe, since I started skat-

ing at 7 years old, that I could be the president of the organization,” Auxier said. “It is a dream come true, but also I feel a real obligation to helping our sport and helping our skaters.” Auxier succeeds Patricia St. Peter, who served five

years as president of the organization. St. Peter, who was elected in 2009 at Governing Council in Buffalo, was praised throughout the weekend for her leadership and dedication to the sport. “It has been an honor and a privilege, and it has

been a lot of fun,” St. Peter said. “We have a tremen- dous organization, thousands of volunteers and fabu-
