New Leadership on KEC Board Pelanconi appointed to serve members in District 3

Heavener, to the co-op board. T

Pelanconi, a Leflore County poultry producer, will represent KEC members in District 3. His appointment fills the term of retiring board member Doug Binns,Poteau, who served on the KEC board for 18 years. Binns and his wife, Labrecia, are moving to Kansas City to be closer to family.

Pelanconi's selection is based on the recommendations of several co-op members in District 3 who recognized him as an active member of the electric cooperative and his rural community. Pelanconi attends the KEC Annual Meeting every year and is a poultry farmer. "His occupation alone makes him an ideal board member, said Jim Jackson, CEO. "Affordable and reliable electric service are particularly important for him."

BUILDING UPDATE Winter Takes AToll on Co-op Headquarters T

he snow may be gone but the cold, wet winter left its mark on the Kiamichi Electric office building.

KEC CEO Jim Jackson said the snow and ice on February 5 caused new water leaks in the roof above the electric/mechanical room that houses the building's electric panels. "We're lucky we were in the building when we discovered the leak. If it had happened on a day we weren’t here, the electrical panels may have been destroyed," said Jackson. "These panels are 6 feet tall and carry amperages that far outnumber a typical house," Jackson explained. "It would have crippled this building along with service to our members, and the cost would have been outrageous."

When the leak was discovered, KEC staff removed the ice and snow from the roof immediately. Roofing professionals

patched the problem but found other problematic areas. "Now our concern is where water infiltrated under the roof and has been standing," Jackson added. "Mold and mildew are a health concern for our employees and our members, not to mention the water damage to walls, floors and documents."

The KEC building committee continues to study plans for a new facility and review functional options such as energy efficient lighting, energy efficient windows and doors, insulation factors, cabinetry, and backup power. Tests conducted on local water pressure will determine fire protection and measure ground temperature readings for geo thermal wells. "We are making sure we have all the information needed to make an informed decision," Jackson said.
