Get the Credit

OEC is updating its records in anticipation of the next capital credit retirement

T e time is approaching for you

to receive the credit you deserve— capital credits, that is—for helping build, sustain, and grow Oklahoma Electric Cooperative. Nearly $4.3 million in capital credits will be retired in August and checks mailed to nearly 21,000 members and 5,500 former members.

You're paying ME? Why?

When you signed up to receive electric service from OEC you became a member, not merely a customer. While investor-owned utilities pay a portion of their profi ts to shareholders, electric co-ops return "margins" to the members—you. Electric co-ops operate at

cost—collecting enough revenue to run and expand the business but with no need to raise rates to generate profi ts for distant shareholders. When the co-op’s fi nancial position permits, margins —revenue left after expenses—are allocated back to you and other members as capital credits. T e next capital credit

retirement will be a portion of the 2006 allocation. Members—past and present—who used OEC electric service during 2006 are eligible to receive capital credit payments refl ecting their contribution of capital to, and ownership of, the cooperative.

12 www.okcoop.org April 2014 T ose funds helped keep the

lid on rates, reduced the amount of money the co-op needed to borrow from lenders to build, maintain, and expand a reliable electric distribution system, and covered emergency expenses.

How much will I get? T e amount of your capital

credit check depends on how much power you used during the retirement period. In this case, the margins collected in 2006 are allocated to members according to the number of kWh used—the more electricity you used (and paid for) the larger your return will be. [18-184-159-01]

Stay in touch. OEC does not have valid contact information for around 2,500 former members (see the list on the next page) eligible for a capital credit payment. If your name or the name of someone you know is printed in this magazine, we need updated contact information. Fill out and return the record update form found on page 30. Additionally, if you see the name of a family member who is deceased and you are the rightful heir, you may complete the form on page 31 and return it along with the appropriate paperwork to transfer the capital credits into your name.
