■ currents ask your co-op
Q. A.
Where can I find information on qualifications for CEC board members? Shouldn’t this be available to members?
You will find this information and plenty more in the Choctaw Electric Cooperative (CEC)
bylaws. When you become a CEC member, you receive a packet of information that explains CEC services, fees, special programs, procedures and so on. The packet includes a copy of the CEC bylaws. The bylaws are also published on your CEC website at
www.choctawelectric. coop. Click on About Us and scroll down to Bylaws. Or pick up a copy at your nearest CEC office.
The bylaws spell out qualifications for co- op trustees in Section 4.02. Among these requirements, board members must be at least 21 years of age with a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Trustees must live in the cooperative district they are elected to represent and cannot be employed by the co-op or engage in business that benefits or competes with the co-op. They can’t hold public office or any public position with a salary of more than $100 per year, and they can’t have a criminal record. During their first term of office, a new board member must be willing to become a certified trustee by participating in state and national certification programs that educate new board members to the history and business of electric cooperatives.
The CEC bylaws are established and approved by CEC members. Reading the bylaws is an excellent way to learn more about your co-op and your responsibilities as a member.

Prepaid Plan Eliminates Late Fees
Late fees, reconnect and disconnect charges are a thing of the past for members enrolled in Choctaw Electric’s prepaid payment plan. When you sign up for prepaid, you pay for your electricity in advance.
Much like a prepaid cell phone card, CEC’s prepaid plan notifies you via email or automated phone call when your balance drops nears zero. At that point, you have the option to pay a few dollars or whatever you feel you can afford.
If your accounts falls to zero, a signal is issued to your meter to disconnect the service. Service is restored when a payment is made.
Members who participate in prepaid payment plans tend to monitor their usage closely and become more familiar with their energy use habits. As a result, experts say they tend to use less and lower their energy costs.
For more information on prepaid payments, please call your co-op at 800-780-6486 or visit www.
choctawelectric.coop.
