ends. The beveled side must be glued to the floor to achieve the appropriate lean. The instructions describe an effec-
tive technique for installing the truss rods from the mono-filament line and plastic turnbuckles such that the cen- ter of the turnbuckle is open. First three-inch pieces of mono-filament line are inserted into each end of the plastic turnbuckle leaving the middle open. The lines are glued to the turnbuckle with cyanoacrylate. A No. 76 hole is drilled through the floor casting for each end of the truss rod. One end of the truss rod line is fed through the holes until the turnbuckle is positioned midway between the queen posts, and then cyanoacrylate is applied where the line snugly enters the hole. Then the other end of the truss rod line is fed through the other hole and cement is applied at that hole. When dry, the truss rod is lifted into place on the two queen posts. Finally, the excess line on the top of the floor is cut off. Most of the grab irons on the NP car
are non-standard lengths, the side grab irons are 23 inches long and the end grabs are 12 inches long. So the modeler needs to bend straight grab irons to the appropriate lengths from straight brass wire. Wire of .008″ diam- eter most closely represents the thick- ness of grab irons. The two grabs on each end sill are standard length and the kit includes pre-formed grab irons for them. The eight-pages of instructions in-
clude three photos of prototype cars and 14 construction photos of the mod- el. The instructions are rather brief and assume the modeler has prior ex- perience building resin kits. A list of the kit parts is not provided. A photo of the brass etching sheet is shown with each part clearly identified. To weight the model, a flat metal
weight (not included) can be glued to the top of the underframe casting be- fore installing it into the carbody cast- ing. It is best to drill and tap holes in the underframe casting for the cou- plers and trucks before installing the
weight on the underframe casting. An interesting feature in this kit is
the technique used for attaching small brass parts. The brass etchings in the kit for the corner stirrups, brake step, lateral walk supports and running board supports have small holes to en- able them to be “pinned” securely in place. These etched holes need to be en- larged slightly before installation. Af- ter the brass parts are initially glued in place, a No. 79 bit can be used to drill through the small holes in the etchings of the carbody. Then, short lengths of .008″ diameter wire are in- serted through the holes in the etch- ings into the carbody and glued to pin the brass parts securely in place. The excess wire is then clipped off leaving a touch of wire proud to simulate a bolt holding the part. This an elegant solu- tion for attaching small brass parts. Two A-frames for mounting the brake levers are created by folding parts from the etched brass sheet. Appropriate Andrews trucks for this
NP car are not commercially available but the instructions include six photos showing how one could modify Kadee Andrews trucks to produce trucks rep- resenting the NP Andrews trucks. The provided decals by Black Cat are
appropriate for NP boxcars lettered from 1942 to 1948 with the three-foot diame- ter three-color NORTHERN PACIFIC herald. The decals include a selection of road numbers, 13 repack dates, 13 reweigh dates and 35 NP weigh station codes. Photos of a prototype car printed on
the instructions can be referenced to accurately apply the lettering. Yarmouth Model Works will include a supplemental decal sheet for pre-war NP lettering if the buyer requests it when ordering a kit. To complete the review kit, the fol-
lowing additional parts were installed: Kadee “scale” head metal “whisker” couplers ( No. 158) and Andrews trucks by Tahoe Model Works (TMW-212). This is the first available HO kit
that represents this important “signa- ture” NP boxcar. The kit is appropriate
detail. Great for custom casting or temporary support. 3 oz. cake. Part # 949-525 - $7.98 + $4.95 shipping and applicable taxes.
