the detailing and molding. Paul Tu- paczewski from the Erie Lackawanna Historical Society worked with Athearn to produce a model that was perfect as far as paint and lettering. The effort was well worth it since this model has no flaws that I can detect. The black circles around the classification lights and the black gaskets around the numberboards are something that I rarely see on a fac- tory painted Erie Lackawanna model. The warning and danger decals on the engine are also correctly placed and well done. I love seeing the builder’s plate and trust plate properly located and this model has them as well. Everything that needs to be on this model is there and done just right. Thank you ELHS and Athearn. Athearn Genesis locomotives are

known for excellent performance and this model is no different. My model is one of the Tsunami sound equipped models, a trip to the programming track got me running quickly. I set my models cab number to 3641 and also set the horn to the correct Leslie 3-chime horn. At speed step 1, the locomotive started crawling at .9 s.m.p.h. The engine’s speed increased steadily and smoothly through its entire speed range. I was happy with the speed range; so I did not feel the need to adjust the speed table. The Tsunami decoder does allow the user to adjust this to their liking. This engine is a puller, too! I dragged 20 properly weighted cars around the lay- out without any problems whatsoever. The engine did struggle a bit on the he- lix but that is to be expected. I plan on running my SDP with a few other loco- motives, so I don’t see any problems with the pulling power at all. The engine sounds beautiful plain

and simple. Fans of the EMD tur- bocharged 20 cylinder 645 prime

mover will rejoice. The Tsunami sound decoder is, in my eyes, one of the best on the market. The prime mover fires up and settles down into that familiar idle with that turbo singing away. Air pops and hisses occur randomly and from time to time you can hear that air compressor thumping away. Notch out and the prime mover

starts getting more vocal. Each notch is recorded as well as the transition up and down from notch to notch. Other manufacturers have been known to record the prime mover idling and then just speed up the recording eight times to capture the sound in individual notches. Soundtraxx took the time to do it right and fully capture the sound of the engine. The distinct sound of the Leslie 3-chime horn is reproduced beautifully as well. The horn is able to be blown as a short burst with one but- ton or as a longer burst with the horn button. The bell also has that typical EMD clang sound. The user can adjust the ring rate to their liking. All sounds featured within this decoder have ad- justable volume. The Soundtraxx Tsunami sound decoder is like the ulti- mate super-detail part. I am very happy to see that Athearn

is willing to produce models that are not only superior in quality and per- formance, but of obscure model vari- ants as well. I never expected to see an oddball locomotive like this produced by a major manufacturer let alone with all the correct details for each proto- type. It is a must have for any Erie Lackawanna modeler. The fact that the sound equipped model comes a with Soundtraxx Tsunami sound decoder in- stalled just seals the deal for me. The Athearn Genesis Erie Lackawanna SDP45 is currently available and the d.c. version sells for $189.98, while the DCC/Tsunami Sound equipped version sells for $289.98.—SCOTT LUPIA
