Visiting the Elk River Logging Railroad

It is a busy morning in town (above) with plenty of activity at the garage and a delivery of lumber being dropped off at the wood shop. A small, backwoods sawmill with a passing sid- ing are located on the way to the first switchback (below). In the background is a log bridge leading to the second switchback. A derelict engine that was caught in a fire sits outside the enginehouse awaiting scraping (bottom). Surrounded by old, rusted wheels, barrels and othe scrap, it appears that the Elk River employees are loathe to dispose of anything.

dual gauge trackage, which is support- ed by coal, mining, beer and lumber from Elk River. The seaport brings in manpower for the logging towns and cargo coming in from the sea. This lay- out is developing into a large switching railroad with trackage connected to Elk River. I am looking forward to working on the buildings, scenery and water for this new section. Some build- ings, as well as a full wharf, are al- ready completed. Both of these layouts will be open for viewing on the layout tours sponsored by the National Model Railroad Associ- ation’s National Convention in Cleve- land, Ohio. The NMRA convention runs from July 15 to 19. For more informa- tion on the convention, you can check out the website: www.2014cleveland.org. I hope you will be able to stop by.
