lettered. In addition, there is informa- tion on paint schemes from foreign roads and Pullmans that operated on the road. Adding frosting to this excel- lent book is painting information on steam and diesel locomotives, as well as the railroad’s one and only Budd RDC. Why is this book so important? Be-
cause, from my point of view, despite the extensive planning and designing of the various paint schemes over the years, it seems Southern Pacific could never, ever, completely standardize on a paint scheme protocol for its equip- ment. For fans, this was a bonanza. Every time we went trackside we never knew what we would see. The railroad never stopped experimenting. Take the EMD F-unit, for example.
There was the original black widow paint scheme, the modified one, ones with the metal medallion in place, ones without, experiments in black and or- ange, the red and scarlet scheme, and variations of the red and scarlet scheme. And remember, this is just for one type of locomotive in the freight pool. The railroad took great pains to standardize its rolling stock, and then, whether they are passenger cars, freight cars, steam engines, diesel switchers, whatever, management al- ways had to tinker with it. Paint scheme information includes lettering and number for locomotives

McCabe Crew Quarters
Using old railcars for other purposes is a standard practice around the logging lines. A place for the crew to rest was needed at the McCabe facility, and an old Pullman was acquired for that purpose. Lifting it off its trucks, removing the brake gear, and adding a couple of oil heaters was all that was needed. The kit consists of a plastic car body, laser-cut
basswood and plywood, and brass & white metal detail castings. Overall footprint is a scale 95' x 15'.
