Complexity.” This plan would change a large portion of New York City’s real estate, establish the concept of “Air Rights” and revolutionize the haulage of passenger trains by means of electri- fication. The electrification offered the additional benefits of cleaner air in the environment, as well as in the tunnel approach to Grand Central Terminal, increasing the safety of passengers and reducing the noise emanating from the Park Avenue tunnel. ing the freight problem and its atten- dant grid lock of vehicles, the elimina- tion of expensive freight handling and the congestion resulting from all the river traffic. Lack of any cooperation by the area railroads to making any con- cessions on the haulage of freight ren- dered the plans moot; this resulted lat- er in the 20th century in the bankruptcy of at least some of the rail- roads terminating in the metropolitan area. The intransigence of the rail- roads also assisted in the formation of the Port Authority, which after wran- gling with the railroads, changed their focus to truck transportation. This proved to be no solution at all (as this writer discovered while waiting to inch forward on the New Jersey Turnpike Extension entering Jersey City). A thoroughly researched book, I found it filled with familiar names of
others in engineering and transporta- tion: Bion Arnold, prominent electrical engineer who developed the automatic substation; Frank Julian Sprague who perfected the multiple unit control in both electric and diesel-electric locomo- tives, which we take for granted, and electrified the South Side Rapid Tran- sit in Chicago and the electric elevator; Gustav Lindenthal of bridge engineer- ing fame; and George Westinghouse of Westinghouse Electric. William John Wilgus performed ex-
tensive studies for any of the problems he encountered, always bringing to his studies experts in their respective fields. He served a long and distin- guished career in engineering, giving solutions that were not always enacted. To the detriment of both the railroads and the port of New York, his proposals for the handling of freight have left the region much as it had been at the turn of the twentieth century. Ironically, despite his great accom- plishments, William Wilgus’ name is not included on the plaque that is in Grand Central Terminal, an oversight that I believe needs to be addressed. I can heartily recommend this book
for those readers who are interested in the history of both Grand Central Ter- minal and the Metropolitan area of New York–and especially Manhattan Island.–JOHN L. HODSON
A Superb New Book About Southern Pacific Steam!
SP Ten-Coupled Locomotives, Robert J. Church Tis long-awaited book from noted SP locomotive authority Bob Church covers all the ten-coupled types, from El Gobernador of the 1880s and the T&NO 2-10-0s, to all the 2-10-2s and 4-10-2s. Extensive research has yielded the full details about SP’s experiments with valve gear on 2-10-2 number 3769, and equally full details about the design and con- struction of the three-cylinder locomotives with Gresley valve gear in the SP Class 4-10-2s. Typical of Church’s in-depth information, it has many unpublished photos, some in color, and includes line profiles, maps, and locomotive/tender plans in its 24 chapters, and also features a chapter on tenders by Arnold Menke. Exhaustive information on history, opera- tions and maintenance is also presented. No SP fan should be without this book.
