Finally, something in Keith Wills’ COLLECTOR CONSIST on Montgomery Ward Catalog ads for train sets caught my eye. The top ad on page 90 for a “Train does everything real train does” shows a rudimentary operations sequence, step by step, actually a switching puzzle of sorts, effectively an Inglenook Sidings puzzle. I wonder if this ad may have spurred young enthusiasts to consider real operations rather than just watch- ing the train run around in circles? PHILIP GLIEBE

Landing brought back memories of a vacation in western Canada in 2009 when we drove the full length of Okanagan Lake on the very scenic west bank road. I didn’t know much about the rail-marine scene in Canada at that time; otherwise I would have visited Okanagan Landing to find out what it is like today. Sohl on putting work car train equip- ment to good use in the January 2014 issue. I noticed in the top picture on Page 60 that the ditcher on the flat car is facing the wrong direction. The boom is always to be trailing when in transit in case a low obstruction is encoun- tered. In this case if a low obstruction was hit, the ditcher would get shoved into the caboose. Less damage would be caused to the ditcher and the sur- rounding equipment if the boom were


trailing. If you cannot eliminate dam- age, at least minimize it. In the D&RGW Rules and Regula-


tions of the Operating Department, 1938 under the heading of Freight Conductor, Rule 872 states: “He must handle cars in accordance with billing or instructions, checking cars in his train with the billing or instructions and see that they are in safe condition for movement. “When spreaders are handled in


trains other than work extras they must be headed in working direction. “Where wreckers, clam shells or oth-


er derricks are moved the boom should be trained in trailing direction.” I realize it is just a small point, but

Cab forward memories The review of Memories of Cab For- wards: A Personal View (February, 2014 RMC) contains an error. The cab in front design work was done by Baldwin. The two original engines were sent to Tehachapi and were not turned until several years later. The engines were not an instant success. A marine pump was installed in the fuel line, and as with oth- er oil burners, heating coils were in- stalled in the oil bunkers. Cold filtered crude oil does not flow very easily, how- ever, that still left them starved for oil on high use. Eventually the bunkers were pressurized to five pounds. Living in the Bay Area, I grew up


with these engines. My maternal grandfather was a machinist for Southern Pacific and worked on them. As steam was being phased out on the weekends, the West Oakland ready track was a very popular spot. Espee’s reaction was to place trash cans and a rope barrier. Bob Bennett’s piece on a small oil deal- ership is an excellent article, and I no- ticed something therein very well done and seldom modeled, i.e., on his large storage tanks, there are subtle stains above each seam. I assume these are to depict condensation with dirt or mold adhering to the condensation–a really nice effect. Can you inquire of him and get him to share a paragraph with us describing his technique for achieving that attractive super detailing feature? I, for one, would be most grateful.
