Modeling a truck to rail coal loader


This dual service structure is still in service along the Reading & Northern near Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania/Jim Hertzog

hile researching mining struc- tures along the Reading & Northern Railroad’s (ex-Read- ing) mainline in the hard coal region of northeastern Pennsylvania, I ventured upon an interesting dual service coal loader. Located one mile west of Ma- hanoy City, this distinctive truck to rail loader offered two separate dumping options. One half of the loader was a basic dumping platform employing pulleys and a wooden ramp that would lower and extend over the hopper car. The other half of the loader featured


This truck to rail coal loader (right) served as inspiration for the author’s HO scale model (above), which was scratchbuilt from styrene. The model is situated just in front of a wall on the author’s layout. While it doesn’t take up much space, it still pro- vides traffic to the railroad.
