Modeling business cars for the C&O and Pere Marquette

with grab irons and a B&O tail sign which are to be added by the modeler. Step one was to remove the couplers and the trucks, and then to remove the body from the frame. The body includes the entire passenger compartment of the car and the interior details. Once the couplers and the trucks were re- moved, round toothpicks were inserted between the body and the frame at sev- eral locations to spread the shell enough to separate the two pieces. Al- though the roof does come off, I found it is difficult to remove without separat- ing the body from the frame. If you need to remove the roof, do it from the inside once the body is off.


I also separated the interior detail section from the body and took off the side, front and rear window inserts and the “light pipe” for the rear beacon. These were placed in a clean box until it was time to re-install them.


These business cars for the Chesapeake & Ohio and the Pere Marquette are relettered Baltimore & Ohio cars from Kato with added interior details, scale figures and lighting.

hen I saw the Kato HO scale Baltimore & Ohio Budd busi- ness car in blue and yellow, I


knew I had to have one for my Chesa- peake & Ohio fleet as well as one for my Pere Marquette roster. However, as beautiful as the B&O cars were, I had

to make some changes. In addition to changing the road names, I wanted to add lighting and some life to the interi- or and exterior of the cars. Out of the box the cars run well, and the rear beacon above the observation platform works flawlessly. The car comes


Removing the B&O logo To preserve as much of the original paint as possible and to avoid seeing any of the old logos bleed through, I used a Pink Pearl®

grease and patience to literally erase the B&O logos and the numbers on the sides of the cars. (I installed the grab irons before removing the logo. I rec- ommend you erase the logo, and then install the grab irons if you do this sort
