The Strasburg Rail Road in Pennsylvania is, first and foremost, a tourist hauler designed to make money for its shareholders — just like any other business or “real” railroad. Historic authenticity and steam locomotives are used as a way to bring in customers. We can be grateful, however, that what makes them successful often meshes with preservation goals.

Today those coaches are proper Pull- man green, and the balloon stack is on the scrap heap. Yet, no matter how “perfect” the effect is,


the tourist railroad still only has one pri- mary goal, and that is to sell tickets and


make money. The presentation of restored vintage railroad equipment is just a part of enticing the public to ride. Let’s not discount the fact that if not for the tourist railroads, many valuable artifacts would not be saved for us to enjoy today. However, tourist rail- roads are not bound by the same rules that govern museum collections, and are able to trade, sell, or scrap their equipment as they see fit.
