South of Decatur, Highway 59 is right beside the tracks for the next two miles or so, paralleling the tracks until the north side of Gentry. South of Gen- try, the road peels away from the KCS main, ending a truly enjoyable run through the rolling hills in this beauti- ful area.
For the added interest of elevation, there are many overpasses one can work for photo ops in this area. From
north to south, starting at Lanagan, County Road EE crosses over the tracks just south of the center of town. Highway 59 crosses over the rails on the north side of Sulphur Springs. In Gravette, Highway 72 crosses over the tracks, just west of the junction with Highway 59. In Decatur, where High- way 59 meets Highway 102, the latter crosses over the rails. In Gentry, just west of where Highway 59 crosses
Highway 12, the latter bridges the tracks.
As mentioned earlier, on the Flint Creek lead to the power plant, High- way 484 crosses over the lead, just east of the power plant. And finally, in Siloam Springs, Highway 412 crosses over the main.
Heavener Sub Operations
Let’s take a closer look at the Heav- ener Sub between Anderson and Siloam Springs, looking at mileposts, detectors and sidings. Anderson is MP 190, Lanagan MP 195, Noel MP 200, Sulphur Springs MP 205, Gravette MP 210, Decatur MP 217, Gentry MP 222 and Siloam Springs MP 229. All mile- posts are measured from Kansas City. Between
Anderson and Siloam Springs, there are four passing sidings.
LEFT: The Heavener Sub crosses over into Arkansas just north of Sulphur Springs, which features this nice bridge located a couple of blocks west of Highway 59. Southbound loaded coal train Second 91 passes over the bridge on the afternoon of July 9, 1993, with a mixed consist of Burlington Northern and KCS units. BELOW: Southbound loaded coal train 91 is now through the Ozark Hills and has a good roll through Gentry, Ark., as seen from the Highway 12 overpass behind a mix of KCS and Oakway units on July 9, 1993.
