Two crowded N-Judah trains meet in ethereal afternoon light at 42nd Avenue in the sleepy Outer Sunset district (known colloquially as “The Avenues”). This neighborhood was once a vastly unpopulated expanse of sand dunes along the Pacific Ocean, and owes its very existence to this heavily trafficked Muni extension, which opened in 1928.
