ventional consists. The author also pays some attention to the light density Norris- town and West Chester routes outside of Philadelphia, often overshadowed by The Main Line. In addition to the PRR, the book includes a chapter that covers Penn Central, Conrail, Norfolk Southern, and the many re- gionals that operate former Pennsy routes today. A two-page, hand-drawn map shows the PRR system in 1952 and a 1916 passen- ger timetable shows how much traffic ran between Pittsburgh and Kittaning This 8¹/₂″×11″ softcover sells for $24.95 plus postage and may be ordered from Consor- tium Book Sales & Distribution, Perseus Books Group, 387 Park Ave. South, 12th floor, New York, NY 10016; orderentry@

Bush is now available from South Platte Press. This 56-page, 11″×8¹/₂″ softcover in- corporates a good deal of little-known infor- mation on the 4-8-4s’ construction from the notes of W.A. Fleischer, a UP mechanical de- partment representative who shepherded the FEF-3 class through Alco’s erecting halls in 1944, as well as two classes of 4-6-6-4 Chal- lengers and the 4-8-8-4 Big Boys. The book discusses why the FEF-3 class was built and delves into considerable detail about their construction and improvements over the ear- lier Northerns. Reproduced in the book, Fleishcher’s notes detail every stage of con- struction for each of the ten FEF-3s and their tenders on a nearly daily basis. The story is fleshed out with a fine selection of 58 nicely printed b&w photos of No. 844 and other members of its class while in service and in

various stages of construction at Schenec- tady. There’s a nice Alco photo of No. 844 at the plant ready for shipment with its piston rods disconnected and headlight boxed in with wood for protection in transit and other photos show it posed with officials, including Mr. Fleischer, and with the Alco rank-and- file. Other chapters discuss and picture the FEF-3s in service and their retirement, and of course 844’s salvation as a snow melting unit in 1959 and its later career in excursion service. This 56-page volume sells for $19.95 plus $5.00 shipping from South Platte Press, P.O. Box 163, David City, NE 68632;

Following the usual Arcadia format, this b&w softcover features an excellent selection of well-print- ed vintage photographs organized into ten chapters. Each chapter begins with a page or so of introductory text while the bulk of the information is contained in the extensive photo captions. The book covers the V&T from its early days moving the Comstock’s wealth to market to its lean years when its ancient rolling stock was sold off to Califor- nia movie studios through its abandonment and scrapping and the road’s later recon- struction in the 1970s. You’ll find photos of McKeen motorcar No. 22, all the classic 19th century steam in regular service and as movie stock, and of course the Lucius Beebe/Charles Clegg era is duly noted. This 128-page, 6¹/₂″×9¹/₄″ softcover sells for $21.99 at your local bookstore or online at www.
