This mid-1980s image at Yarmony siding alongside the Colorado River when — as God intended — the Denver & Rio Grande Western ran the Moffat Line in Colorado, is one of my favorite photos. With the D&RGW now remembered only in history it would be impossible to photograph this scene again today. Having a scanned copy of the negative backed up on multiple portable and external hard drives gives some peace of mind against loss of the photo.

5. STIR IN THE MEAT. 6. ADD THE POTATOES, ONIONS AND SPICES. 7. COVER WITH FOIL, STIRRING OCCASIONAL- LY, LET SIMMER FOR ABOUT HALF AN HOUR OR SO.

Make your backup copies on a portable or thumb drive and copy them into your other computers. In any case, always keep at least one portable/thumb drive backup of all your photos in another location to protect against loss of your home computer(s) and backup drives.
Backup the Backup Regardless of the backup system, remember the creed of backups is “redundancy” (and the more the better). Not only will two or more archival backups allow you to keep one at home for easy access, and a second backup in another location, but multiples protect against the failure of a single backup device itself in addition to a computer failure. You could use two or more USB portables or thumbs or desktop externals, or a portable / thumb and desktop, or the Cloud and a USB drive, or any other combination. Then, when you archive new images to a backup drive, rotate it to a safe outside location, and bring the outside drive home and archive the new images to it. (I have my most important pho- tos backed up five times – in two portable drives with one kept in a safe deposit box, two externals, and my wife’s computer, in addition to the photos on my computer.)
