TOP: The Embarcadero Station, which is served by all Metro routes, is the nexus of Muni rail operations and the ultimate expression of intermodal transit connectivity. The station at the foot of Market Street sits at the convergence of three track gauges on three levels: Muni’s narrow gauge California Street cable car and standard gauge F-Market and Wharves streetcars call at street level, the standard gauge Muni Metro sits one level below ground, and the broad-gauge rapid transit trains of BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) bound for the suburban East Bay and the San Francisco International Airport lurk deeper still. In this scene, riders off an inbound N-Judah train scurry to the station exits, while others enjoy coffee, conversation, and people watching as they wait patiently for an outbound M- Ocean View train.

ABOVE: Eah the Harpist, an aspiring San Francisco musician, soothes weary riders in the Market Street Subway just off an inbound M-Ocean View train at the Castro Station. Activist and slain city supervisor Harvey Milk (the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California) began his political career in the adjacent Castro District. The plaza attached to the Muni station is named in his honor.
