ABOVE: The trackage around Harrisburg’s Amtrak station hadn’t seen a GG1 (or a locomotive with as long a wheelbase) in three decades. Thus, the move was made under the watchful eye of Amtrak and PennDOT personnel. Curves and switches were greased to allow the massive motor to slide through more easily. Once the GG1 was at the end of the Market Street Running Track it would be cocooned to wait out its three year exile from the station.

warded with nice footage of the GG1 and heritage unit passing each other. Things stayed busy, as empty inter-

modal cars at the rear of the train pulled by the N&W unit, a second east- bound freight and the westbound GG1 all passed. In a few more minutes, No. 4859 would be reunited with its com- panion cabin car and the two would await cocooning. They will emerge from their cocoons sometime in 2017 and once again a GG1 will briefly move along the rails of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
