IN 1964 the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority took over most of the rapid transit, streetcar and bus routes in and around Philadelphia (heavy rail opera- tions would be folded into SEPTA in 1981). This year marks the 50th anniversary of the commuter agency and, while no formal plans for a big celebration have been an- nounced, many employees and SEPTA man- agers are planning grassroots acknowledge- ments of the milestone from within the agency. The first of those events in 2014 oc- curred on the night of March 1 into the morning of March 2, when a group of em- ployees arranged to take Red Arrow Divi- sion car No. 101 out for some publicity pho- tos to be used by SEPTA in the anniversary year (plus to generate a little p.r. with the railroad press). The Red Arrow Division consists of the

former Philadelphia Suburban Transporta- tion Company (“Red Arrow Lines”) out of 69th Street Terminal in Upper Darby. In ad- dition to several bus routes, it also includes three rail lines — the Norristown High Speed Line (Route 100) and the Media and Sharon Hill Lines (Routes 101 and 102 re- spectively); the latter two share trackage to Drexel Hill Junction before separating to go to their namesake towns. Route 100 is all grade separated high speed trackage, while 101 and 102 have both private right of way and street running. PST was folded into SEPTA in 1970 and is officially the Victory Division of SEPTA’s Suburban Transit Divi- sion, but local media, employees and resi- dents still universally call it the Red Arrow Division. Car No. 101 was used for the night photos. It is a double-ended Kawasaki LRV used by
