Clover Valley Lumber Company 2-6-6-2T No. 4 powered the annual post-Winterail photographers’ trip on the Niles canyon Railway out of Sunol, Calif., on March 9, 2014. No. 4 is the only Baldwin logging Mallet operating on the west coast. Photo line management was in the capable hands of conductor Mike Roqué who masterfully dealt with a combination of serious photographers and daisy pickers during the trip.

Great Railroad Photography continues... You may remember our first edition of Great Railroad Photography which debuted in 2010. That first volume contained an excit- ing variety of photographic styles from a number of talented contributors. The reac- tion was positively overwhelming. Since that time, we have decided the best way to showcase some of these wonderful features is to bring them right into the pages of RAIL- FAN & RAILROAD. Over the next few months, look for special GRP features that we hope

will inspire you and perhaps encourage you to take a creative look at our favorite hobby. We hope you enjoy the first installment, where Christian Goepel takes us on an all- hours tour of San Francisco’s MUNI system starting on page 32. Please drop us a line, and let us know what you think! — O.M.V.

Advances in high ISO digital cameras make scenes like this possible without the use of a tripod. San Francisco is a great city any time of day, but especially so after dark.
