WANT TO

What attracted you to franchising, and why CeX in particular?

John Hollins, CeX North East

What did you do before taking up a franchise? I’ve had a varied career. I was originally part of the Armed Forces and then ran a large hotel, so I’ve gained a wide range of experience involving managing people and being responsible for a large business.

I was looking for the right business opportunity and knew that a franchise would give me the additional support required to run a larger, and potentially more profi table, business.

It was also important to me to have the independence of running my own business and responsibility for my own destiny. I saw CeX as a well-organised business that knows its market and its customers. It was back in 2008 that I made the decision to become a CeX franchisee. Since then, I have continued to grow, recently opening my fourth store in the North East.

What training and support have you received from CeX? I use CeX’s facilities to help train and develop my staff. I have regular operational and senior management support that enables me to focus on my key objectives and deal with day-to-day issues as they arise. CeX have also given me detailed fi nancial advice at every stage of the process and they offer specialised assistance should I need it.

How has becoming a CeX franchisee changed your life? It’s enabled me to develop a successful business as part of a brand that I have confi dence in. I can organise my work around family life, which is important to me.

What were your criteria for a franchise business?

I was looking for a business with good margins, strong support from the parent company but, most of all, one I would enjoy. The fi nancial investment commits you so it has to be something you like.

What appealed most about owning a CeX franchise? The completely candid approach of CeX accelerated my decision to commit. Everything you need to know is there on a plate to see – model profi t and loss statements for different sized stores, all store data from sales, rents and profi ts.

What training and support have you received from CeX? Initially, you have a ‘store experience’ – a four-day interview process for both parties. Next is a store placement position for a minimum of 400 hours. During this time, you have access to various training courses, which proved invaluable. I have continual support. Issues crop up all the time, but there is always someone on hand to help. CeX have experienced teams to help with a range of issues.

Do you enjoy the business? I love everything about it. Working in the store, managing the staff. It has improved my lifestyle and I don’t have to wear a suit to work ever again! The biggest plus is that it has given me control of my life.

Would a CeX franchise suit anyone in particular? It suits people that are organised and adaptable. You have to fulfi l many roles – director, secretary, HR manager, staff motivator, salesman, marketing man to name but a few! But, you can rely on the business model, the 20-plus years of experience and the existing teams to ensure your success.
