he British Franchise Association’s new board of directors was revealed at the bfa AGM in Birmingham on 12 December, with the new

board’s first order of business being to confirm the new bfa chairman as Simon Bartholomew of Oscar Pet Foods. A hugely respected and popular figure

Michael remains on the board, which governs bfa affairs, and received a standing ovation following his heartfelt final speech as chair at the annual Gala Dinner. Simon said: “It’s a real honour to have been selected by my peers to chair the bfa for the next three years. I’m hugely excited about the prospect of leading an association that represents so many dynamic and diverse companies led by

innovative, forward-thinking business men and women. “It’s an exciting time to be a part of the franchise sector, which has shown exceptional growth during the past five years where other industries have struggled. Ethical franchising has afforded thousands of people the chance to realise their dreams of business ownership and I’m looking forward to helping many more understand its benefits.” All 16 Franchisor and Affiliate Member positions on the board are appointed through nomination and election by the bfa’s membership, with those elected then appointing three franchisee board representatives. It is truly the Association run for franchising, by franchising, and anyone operating within the ethical franchise sector has the chance to become elected and make a real difference in shaping the future of the thriving industry. Two new Companions to the bfa confirmed

At the annual Chairman’s Charity Gala Dinner, outgoing bfa chairman Michael Eyre announced two new Companions of the bfa. Companionship is reserved only for those who have made a significant contribution to the UK franchise industry and is a rare accolade indeed; only 13 have previously been bestowed before two legends of UK franchising were surprised by Michael’s announcement. Derrick Simpson and Andrew Quail join the roll call of franchising’s finest and with

good reason in both cases, Since their exceptional careers have seen them add much to the UK franchise landscape. Derrick has now enjoyed a 25-year

career in the industry, culminating in his founding of Franchise Resales in 2007. In just a short time, he has long been regarded as the sector’s foremost expert on all resale matters through his exceptional knowledge and expertise. Andrew has spent more than 30 years in the sector, as both a franchisor and

franchisee, before becoming the guardian of ethics in his position as the bfa head of compliance and quality standards, joining the Association in 2005. He retires in April having managed to achieve the nigh-on impossible task of upholding exceptional standards and remaining popular and respected among his peers. Both men were genuinely shocked and delighted to be recognised as Companions, and the assembled crowd were equally thrilled at their confirmation.
