Travel

Although the hotel is not on the coast it’s only a stone’s throw away and it is worth seeking out your own slice of tranquillity at one of the many secluded beaches and peb- bled coves. With beautiful walks along spectacular coastal and cliff top paths, marketplaces off er- ing crafts and traditional fairs, local bakeries and the aromas of barbeque meats and fi sh on the grill, you can easily lose yourself in the Gozatian lifestyle. For dinner we opt for the Kempinski’s fi ne dining restaurant decorated in a pleasing tra- ditional Maltese style. Although we don’t have a sea view or the sound of the lapping waves we enjoyed a view overlooking the pools and the gardens on the terrace. We were treated to a complimentary chef ’s special of dips and warm homemade breads with lots of herbs and garlic, which we fol- lowed with starters of risotto and sea urchins, a venture into the unknown which turned out to be surprisingly delicious, and the tradition- al smoked salmon, both beautifully presented. A local Maltese white wine pleasantly com- plemented the courses to follow, although surprisingly Maltese wine can be a little more expensive than other choices. I tucked into octopus for my main course, grilled with spring onion and a little chilli,

and my partner enjoyed the fi llet steak, all perfectly cooked and accompanied by aspara- gus, fresh seasonal roasted vegetables and a potato tower. While a lovely setting throughout, I would

defi nitely recommend taking advantage of a terrace table for romance and ambience. T e following day we indulged in a couple’s

treatment massage. T e Kempinski Spa spe- cialises in treatments refl ecting the European cycle of the seasons and also off ers a rare spa choice; the Ayurveda Experience using an- cient Indian techniques and nurturing treat- ments. My partner sampled the traditional Swedish Kempinski massage and I decided to give the Ayurveda a try. T e 30 minute back, neck and shoulder massage was heavenly and I could have stayed there for another half an hour. I would recommend future guests take advan- tage of a full hour to get the best out of this treatment. Our stay at Kempinski left us fully relaxed. A stay in the Residences would be a must if we return. We headed home warmly content having soaked up some fi ne dining, the beautiful Go- zatian scenery and culture and some much- appreciated late September sunshine.
