As a new calendar year beckons, Actress Sharon Maughan discusses the merits of astrology and what the stars may hold for you in 2014


H


ow many times have you checked your daily horoscope in the paper? At some point most of us have a little gander


at Mystic Meg or Jonathan Cainer. It’s a bit like Marmite - there are those of us who swear by it and those of us who dismiss it as pure piffle. Ten there are the devotees who not only swear by it but take it even further. Tey delve beyond the daily hit and want to know more about how it works. Tat’s when it gets interesting. I became interested in astrology when I moved to London and encountered my first hippies. Everyone was talking about karma and the musical Hair was the biggest thing in the West End. What did The Age of Aquarius mean? What did ‘fate’ and ‘destiny’ mean and how could we know? I remember as a child my staunchly catholic mother saying “if a man is born to hang he’ll never drown”. Tat seemed very anti - catholic to me but it did suggest knowledge. Who has this knowledge and how do we tap into it? I put this question out to the universe and the universe replied; “Astrology. Get your chart done.” So I did. I’m not saying astrology is the answer. It’s


not. It’s neither a science – refuted by most scientists yet referred to and used by most great artists, writers from Chaucer to da Vinci and Shakespeare – nor is it a spiritual experience as such. Astrologers use an almost mathematical approach to working out your birth sign and

the planetary line up specific to you at your time of birth. Tese facts give them informa- tion about your character and characteristics, relationship potential and career and financial guidance. I know it seems weird but it’s true. Whilst there is an obvious cynicism about the “prediction’ side of it (which I agree should be


taken with a pinch of salt) what amazes me is how precise it can be in describing a personal- ity. Once they have your crucial time, date and place of birth then that’s it. It’s a bit like a TV impersonator; they capture the essence of a person and allow you to see them in a new light.
