The Manitou Group recently commemorated 40 years of Gehl skid steer loader design and manufacture. In 1973, Gehl, which Manitou acquired in 2008, began producing its own line of machines in Madison, South Dakota, where they are still made

today. “However, in reality, Gehl marketed its first skid loader in 1969,” says Kelly Moore, Product &

Training Specialist with Manitou Americas, who has worked with the Gehl brand since 1978. “This was a private labelled product, made following a deal struck with the Ericsson Company in Minneapolis, and known as the 3030.” Gehl subsequently brought manufacturing in-house.

Over the next 15 years, Gehl

introduced enhancements such as liquid-cooled engines and hydrostatic transmissions. In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, roll-back ROPS protection was

incorporated along with hydraulic solenoid lift arm lockouts for easier maintenance. 1982 saw the launch of the 4610, a 44hp unit with a side-anchored operator restraint bar.

Shortly afterwards, the 4615 model was added, specifically designed for the construction market, and by 1995, the brand comprised eight models. In 2009 a new research and development facility was opened in Wisconsin, and today’s Gehl line-up, which is offered in the UK and Eire by Manitou UK, consists of seven radial and three vertical lift models.

Thwaites is now offering an equipment tracking device that can be fitted to its dumpers for added security. The Appello GEO system uses mobile (GSM) and homing beacon (RF) technologies to help recover stolen equipment. It needs no wiring or aerial and can be moved to other machines if required. The user can monitor the system via the Internet. Measuring 95mm by 48mm and 18mm thick, the sensor unit can be hidden easily and has up to two years’ battery life. It has been tested against vibration, shocks and temperature extremes, and is IP67 rated.

More Yanmars for Mayday

Mayday Plant Hire of Thornton Heath has added two more Yanmar ViO33 machines from Ammann Equipment to its line-up, complementing other Yanmar models it offers from 1 to 8 tonnes. Director

Derek Blow, pictured, left, with Ammann’s Gary Wingrove, said, “We have bought Yanmar

machines for over 30 years. They have always been reliable and returned a good re-sale value at the end of their hire life. The ViO33 is a true 3 tonne class zero tail swing machine, weighing 3.4 tonnes, and has the same large cab as 5 tonne models. It also has ram guards as standard, and was supplied with Enigma key pad immobilisers and a Datatag security system.” Another recent Ammann order came from Jovic Plant Hire of Basildon, which has bought the first ViO80-1A model in the UK fitted with a new Tier 4 compliant engine. It incorporates an electronic control unit and a common rail system that is claimed to increase performance by 15%, with a 17% decrease in fuel consumption. Jovic MD Peter Goudie says that engine emissions are becoming an increasingly important consideration when buying new equipment.
