“ Over the past

12 months, trading has slowed up compared with last year. However, we are

still busy with our operated and self-drive plant. Our large range of Probst handling and laying equipment is also in greater demand, having recently purchased some new block grabs and two-man vacuum flag lifters simply to keep up with orders. We've also added some new excavators to our hire fleet this year, including a

Takeuchi TB23R, two TB250s and a couple of TB016s, so we are still investing and there are promising signs for the future. We won't stand still and are always actively looking for new opportunities, having just opened a new trade counter supplying pipes and related equipment, work wear, hand tools and accessories. I think next year will be another tough one, but I'm quietly confident it will be better than 2013.

And, I’ll certainly be visiting the Executive Hire Show in February.

There is a lot more confidence within our business. We have seen a steady increase throughout the year after a slow start due to a harsh winter at the end of 2012. We have invested heavily in our fleet during this year, increasing our machine availability and quality, and plan to invest further throughout 2014. With this in mind, and the increase in costs we have seen from our suppliers, it is hoped that, as demand grows, so will hire rates.

And, I’ll certainly be visiting the Executive Hire Show in February.

Our plant and tool hire activities have continued their development and growth into the third quarter of 2013, with record figures reported for both parts of the business, and we have continued to invest in our fleet. Our dedicated Fairfax Hire Centre operation, specialising in tools and small plant and located on a separate business park, is now recruiting for extra staff to meet demand. Prospects for next year are very positive, with the housing market finally getting a kick start from both the government and the banks. Commercial developments are taking place at Westfield in Bradford, Victoria Gate in Leeds, and at Hull Fruit Market, and infrastructure spending on the A1(M) motorway and biofuel power generation projects are also getting the green light. We are already in negotiation with suppliers regarding plant purchases for 2014.

David Johnstone, MD, Your Equipment Solutions, Grangemouth Trading has been very good for us in 2013 but, being a relatively new business, it would be foolish to only

compare performance versus 2012. We have made significant investment to diversify our product range, to ensure that we are able to target additional market opportunities that are not necessarily so reliant on construction or the local petrochemical industry. Our contract count and turnover have increased steadily each month and, with a number of our key accounts reporting an increase in the amount of tenders being submitted, we anticipate another strong year in 2014. The prolonged dry and mild period we have had has undoubtedly driven product utilisation compared with last year, with a greater number of outdoor projects being undertaken. One trend that has continued is that hire contract durations continue to be kept to a minimum, due to more prudent cost controlling by relevant hire customers. All in all, there is still lots to go for and, with hire rates also on the increase, bring on 2014!

17 ”    There’s been a

definite upturn since around June, and 2013 will be our best year since the recession. Construction sites are opening up and creating demand for our toilets. The events market has also remained strong. As a result, we have been adding more units to our fleet from Satellite Industries, and we have bought two additional service tankers. Overall, the prospects look very promising for the year ahead.
