Using an AED 6.4 Handover and Reporting Procedures
Information is stored within the software on the defibrillator. Typically this information includes time sequenced events, ECG, time of event, number of shocks delivered etc. This information is available to download from the defibrillator via a cable or Bluetooth to a computer or can be accessed via a memory card post rescue. Currently there are no formal handover or reporting procedures in place in the UK for when a defibrillator has been used.
There are, however, several organisations who would like to collate information on AED usage.
The Resuscitation Council UK would like information on AED use for statistical analysis. They have an event report form you can download from their website
www.resus.org that asks for simple but vital information such as:
- Date of incident - Was the incident witnessed? - Was CPR administered before the defibrillator arrived? - Did the victim start breathing before the ambulance arrived?
Your local Ambulance Service could possibly ask for a little more information particularly if the casualty is in hospital. They may wish to download the information from the defibrillator within about 24 hours so that they can see how many shocks were delivered, at what energy levels and how long the whole rescue took.
This additional information will give them some background into the treatment received prior to the arrival of professional medical assistance.
