Basic Life Support Assessing a Casualty

Once you have established that it is safe to approach your casualty, you now need to establish what’s wrong with the casualty. This is done through a series of logical surveys based upon the priorities of first aid.

Your primary concern is to check the casualty’s Breathing. Once that is established and maintained we can then turn our attention to see if the casualty is Bleeding and once this is controlled we can finally investigate and treat any Breaks that may have occurred.

4.3 The Primary Survey

By starting our assessment and treatment of a casualty with the Primary Survey we are ensuring that we find and deal with the most life threatening conditions first and are not distracted by any non life threatening conditions.

Remembering and using the acronym DRABC will ensure you perform the actions of the primary survey in the correct sequence.
