Using an AED Using an AED

Earlier in this first aid manual you learnt how to perform a “Primary Survey” (remember to use the acronym DRABC), and you also leant how to perform “CPR”. Now you will combine these skills and incorporate the use of a defibrillator.

Here is a quick reminder:

D R A B C

Check the area is safe, if it is safe to do so remove any hazards

Check to ensure the casualty is conscious by asking them “Are you alright?”

If there is no response, open the airway using the “Head tilt / Chin lift” method

If the casualty is NOT breathing normally – send someone to call 999/112 for an ambulance and then return with an AED

Start CPR according to the latest guidelines (see page number 29) and continue until the AED arrives. If possible continue with CPR whilst the electrode pads are attached to the casualty (you may have to do this yourself if no help is available)

“Do not delay starting CPR unless the AED is available immediately”
