Basic Life Support CPR Infant - Step by Step
If we discover an infant who is unconscious and NOT breathing normally, we still have to perform CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation). Many people are concerned about performing CPR on such a small person for fear of “hurting” them however this is the infant’s best chance of survival. The steps you are to follow are very similar to adult CPR with a couple of modifications to make them more appropriate to infants. Remember an infant is less than one year old.
Step 1. Perform your Primary Survey; tap the infant’s foot. Kneel down next to the infant, roughly level with the chest.
Step 2. If you are alone, and the infant is NOT breathing normally, give 5 initial rescue breaths followed by 1 minute of CPR then get up, leave the infant and go phone 999/112 for an ambulance. If you have a bystander present send them to do it instead.
Step 3. Upon your return, continue 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths until help arrives, the infant begins to regain consciousness and starts breathing normally again or you become too exhausted to continue performing CPR.
Chest Compressions on an Infant Place two fingers in the centre of the infant’s chest and compress the chest by at least one-third of its depth at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
Rescue Breaths on an Infant Place the palm of one hand on the infant’s forehead. Place the other hand under the infant’s chin and tilt the head back, extending the airway but be careful not to over extend. Open your mouth; make a seal around the infant’s mouth and nose and blow gently, watching the rise and fall of the infant’s chest. Do not overinflate the infant’s lungs. Blow no more than a second and repeat.
