Using an AED 6.3 AED Troubleshooting

As you know from the start of this book AEDs perform regular self checks of circuitry and battery levels, these checks are performed daily, weekly or monthly dependent on the model. In the unlikely event that a problem was found, the AED would inform you via an audible alarm and / or flashing indicator.

“Audible chirp or beep / status indicator changed from green to red” At this stage all you need to do is find out what the problem is. Do this by switching the defibrillator on and the unit’s voice prompts will indicate the nature of the problem.

“No audible chirp or beep / status indicator changed from green to red” Battery completely flat, replace battery immediately.

“Battery running low” Typically AED batteries when they start to inform you of this warning have sufficient power left in them for multiple shocks, so can be used in a rescue situation, but you do need to change your battery as soon as possible.

“Service / maintenance required” If you hear this message then you must refer back to the manufacturer as only approved / appointed service personnel can assist you at this time. This could happen if the AED has been dropped or damaged in some way or possibly because the AED has been subjected to extreme environmental conditions (heat or cold).

“Check pads” If you hear this warning then the electrode pads have either become disconnected from the AED, and obviously need reconnecting or (unlikely as the pads have a very sticky gel) they have come off the casualty. It is good practice to keep a spare set of electrode pads with your defibrillator in case the first set gets damaged. Generally speaking defibrillators require little or no actual maintenance because of these internal checks. Any issues should be raised directly with the defibrillator manufacturer and will be rectified through your warranty.
