The Heart How the Heart Works

The heart is roughly located in the centre of your chest, it is a muscle and its purpose is to pump oxygenated blood around your body to keep you alive. Clearly this is a very important organ, it has to perform its job, all day, every day for your entire life!

Should it go wrong or something prevents it from doing its job properly, then death would occur within minutes.

So how does it work?

The heart along with the blood and blood vessels make up something known as the circulatory system. The heart pumps the blood to all your vital organs and body tissues. The blood carries oxygen, water and nutrients around the body and then collects any waste products that need removing.
