Basic Life Support 4.5 The Recovery Position - Step by Step

If we discover a casualty who is unconscious and breathing normally, we place them in the Recovery Position. We do this to manage their airway, prevent the tongue from falling towards the back of the throat and protect their airway from vomit.

Step 1. Perform your Primary Survey. Kneel down next to the casualty, roughly level with the chest.

Step 2. Grab hold of the arm that is closest to you, bend the elbow and allow the hand to rest palm upwards.

Step 3. Grab the arm furthest from you, bring it towards you, hold the hand with your hand, palm to palm and place the back of the casualty’s hand on the casualty’s cheek.

Step 4. With your free hand, reach across to the casualty’s leg that is furthest from you and pull it up from behind the knee, bending the leg so that the foot is flat on the floor.
