Using an AED Using an AED - Step by Step
Using an AED is simple, just switch it on and follow the voice and visual prompts. The machine will tell you exactly what to do to help save someone’s life.
“Using an AED is simple”
Step 1. Switch on the AED and follow the voice and visual prompts. (If more than one rescuer is present, continue CPR while the AED is switched on. If you are alone, stop CPR and switch on the AED.)
Step 2. Remove the casualty’s clothing from the upper chest. (This applies to both male and female casualties as you need a bare chest for the next step.)
Step 3. Take out the electrode pads from the packaging. Look at the pictures on the electrode pads to ensure you place them correctly on the casualty’s chest. Place the first pad under the casualty’s right collarbone and the second pad on the left hand side of the chest. (You may need to dry the chest if it is wet or shave the chest if it is too hairy so that the electrode pads will stick to the casualty’s skin. But DO NOT waste much time doing this.)
