Understanding AEDs 2.5

Safety considerations when using an AED Before applying the pads, check the casualty for:

Jewellery - remove jewellery from front of chest area as it may cause an ineffective shock if a pad is placed on top of it.

Medication Patches – remove GTN (Glyceryl Trinitrate) patches as they may cause burns or ineffective shock.

Pacemakers - the device may fail or cause the defibrillator to analyse a false rhythm.

Defibrillation if the victim is wet - as long as there is no direct contact between the user and the victim when the shock is delivered, there is no direct pathway that the electricity can take that would cause the user to experience a shock.

Dry the victim’s chest so that the adhesive AED pads will stick and take particular care to ensure that no one is touching the victim when a shock is delivered.

Highly Flammable Atmospheres - there is a danger of the AED creating a spark when the shock is delivered, so it should not be used in a highly flammable atmosphere (in the presence of petrol fumes for example).

Motion - the vibration and movement of a moving vehicle can cause a very similar rhythm to VF (Ventricular Fibrillation) under analysis, leading the AED to “think” the victim is in a shockable rhythm when they are not. Stop all vehicle motion when analysing and shocking casualties.
