Signalling

investment and commitment, efficiency can be achieved. The UK actually set the precedent for

re-signalling with the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in 1995. DLR reported its highest-ever passenger numbers during the Games, up by more than 100 per cent on normal levels. Its busiest day, on 3rd August 2012, saw more than half-a-million passengers use the service for the first time in its history. DLR maintained a success rate for on-time departures of better than 99 per cent throughout the Games. There is clear and strong evidence to

greatest challenges is the continuing need to modernise an ageing infrastructure across London. With the success of the London

Underground during the Games there is now a proven case study demonstrating capacity enhancement with the delivery

of work on one of the world’s oldest and largest metro systems. During the Games the Jubilee and Northern Lines carried thousands of spectators to and from the Games venues proving how transport infrastructure can expand and contract successfully. With an appropriate level of

support the need to modernise ageing infrastructures and with the technological expansion of more and more sophisticated communications-based signalling systems network operators need to think short, medium and longer-term when they are making enhancements to a valuable national rail asset. To minimise disruption to service and to maximise a return on investment, modernisation of both mainline and metro line signalling systems will help to future-proof railways of tomorrow.
