initially told by her buyers’ lender that her house was worthless is painful by anyone’s standards, but Goodhead did concede, ‘those working in the rail sector seem to be suffering from an image problem which is more dominated by public opinion than the reality of working in the sector itself.’ A bit of a chink of light then.

ot a great few weeks for the industry. Network Rail ‘carpeted’ by ministers, as the FT put it, for poor performance; loud complaints about Mark Carne’s salary overshadowing Network Rail’s statement that his overall remuneration package would not be higher than David Higgins’. And then, of course, there’s HS2, which

came in for a kicking by Dominic Lawson in The Sunday Times. In a piece that could turn the most ardent fan into a quivering jelly of indecision, he scathingly described the project as ‘the rail equivalent of Concorde’. Back in June when Rail Professional interviewed Alison Munro, chief executive of

HS2 Ltd, she mentioned that HS2 was not a silver bullet, and countries that have been successful in using high speed rail to regenerate and lead development have had strong supporting policies. The KPMG report is very appropriate then. Predicting a £15 billion annual boost

to the economy through HS2, it looks at the business case by focusing on jobs, productivity and growth, and although critics say it doesn’t consider whether there is a skill-base or the availability of developable land for companies in areas that it is hoped HS2 will help regenerate, overall it must be good PR for the cause. It’s just a shame it was commissioned by HS2 Ltd. Still, it was a bit of a surprise to hear that rail professionals are the least proud of their sector according to research by engineering recruiter Randstad - only 32 per cent are, compared to those in the insurance sector, which came out at 90 per cent. HS2 got the blame again, with Owen Goodhead, the MD of Randstad suggesting

that the project’s ‘ongoing challenges’ have prevented a similar upswing in motivation that the construction sector enjoyed after the Olympic Park was completed. Lord Deighton would strongly disagee I’m sure. Reading about a 98 year-old woman living on the proposed route of HS2 who was
